As usual, I am busy studying for midterms. I made it through the first hell week of the semester! I have not gone on any crazy adventures lately, but I do have some exciting news to share.
First, I am one of the new Animal Behaviour Club fundraising chairs! I look forward to helping this fantastic club in the future, and learn along the way! I’ve been taking more interest in behavior lately, especially canine behavior, as I am working with one of my kennel companions on her reactivity issues. Behaviour is not something we are directly taught in vet school; it is up to each individual to educate themselves. So I have been working with the behavior coordinator on how to best handle her issues. So far I have learned a ton, and can’t wait to learn more through ABC.
My second piece of news is very exciting, and something I have wanted to do for as long as I can remember. Drum roll please———————I am getting certified in small animal acupuncture!!! This opertunity came completely out of the blue, and I couldn’t be more excited and thankful for this opportunity. Sometimes things come out of nowhere when you need them most, and after the last few weeks I have had this was a welcome surprise.
This certification is done with the Chi Institute through the Integrative Veterinary Medicine Club on campus. It is composed of 5 modules, 2 of which have a wet lab component. Normally one would have to go to Florida for these wet labs, but IVMC has organized for instructors to come to St. Kitts and teach us, at the very least module 2. The remainder of the modules are done online. With a start date of June 20, and module 2 wet lab scheduled for mid-semester break this fall, there is a very good chance I will be able to finish all the modules by the time I graduate from Ross. While there are some details to figure out down the road, once I write the final exam, get my 30 hours of shadowing, and do a case study I will be certified in small animal acupuncture!! In the future I plan on getting large animal certified, but in the mean time I am very thankful to be one of 20 who were picked. I can’t wait to share what we are learning with you!
Last but not least, I just found out that I will be the IVMC vice president beginning this September!! I am over the moon about this, I love this club so much, and have a lot of ideas I hope to bring to the club. I will begin training with the current VP this semster to get a feel for what my role will include.
All these extra things will keep me busy, but they are things I am very passionate about. Plus, I always work better when I am busy!
Tomorrow I am going out to take photos of my friends and their dogs at a new spot near campus that looks promising! Hopefully will be posting photos in the next few days if it goes well. In the mean time here are some photos of the very handsome Henri, the current ruler of my little roost. I’m going to miss his furry face when his parents take him back in a couple months.
I just can’t resist his snaggle tooth!
That’s all for now!
